Recently, Google launched a new feature to its search tools called the Google Knowledge Graph. It is an interconnected collection of data generated from different sources online that gives its users smarter and more relevant results for their searches. Instead of obtaining random results based on a string of characters in keyword searches, Google provides results that are more closely related to what the user actually means.
The Google Knowledge Graph is evidence that Google understands the concepts and semantics behind web searches and doesn’t just operate robotically around strings of characters and keywords. New additional data relevant to what people search are shown on the side panel, right next to the search results. Once you search a particular person, place, or thing, relevant information including the person’s date of birth, birth place, height, etc. is featured in a snippet on the right side of the page. For similar results, links with appropriate pictures are featured below. This enables users to get the right information they need quickly, without having to run down every search results page to collect the information they want.
Let us take a look at one example. If we searched “USA” on Google, we would come across results that lead to USA as a country and its government. To the side, we could find a snippet of what the USA is about, including its capital, GDP, population, and national anthem. We could also find links to different points of interest in the US to receive more personalized and useful information.
In other words, Google is now offering its searchers more knowledgeable information about the people, places, and things they are searching rather than giving them random data that may or may not be relevant to their search. As of now, the Google Knowledge Graph snippets will only show up on queries about a specific book, movie, famous person, location, or sport. Companies, video games, and cars are not yet included.
